Personally, I believe in taking breaks between relationships. Without doing the math, I'm guessing I've spent 50% of my adult life in relationships and the remaing 50% I was giving my energy and attention to other things and wasn't looking for a relationship or even available for one. How you spend you time (working time and free time) is your choice and a reflection of your values. The fact that you don't have the time for inner work (soul searching, as you describe it), is a reflection of your values. The good news is that is your shot to. As you have guessed, I'm an advocate of it and have managed to take time for it. I can generally tell in short order whether I'm in the presence of someone who has done it or not. Its just so clear in the speaking, the actions, the quality of relationships, the workability of life and overall satisfaction and contentment with life. It doesn't mean life goes your way. It means you've developed the means within your self to accept and find peace with what's so. I'm a strong believer in the perserverence of the human spirit. I think you're in the throws of a life transition which is often precipitated by crisis and loss. I believe you'll figure it out and do just fine.
